A WORKING
LIFE

A practitioner record. The headings are roles; the substance is what they each forced me to learn about architecture under pressure.

§1 — Experience
2018 — Present Soaring Wings · Independent practice

Principal Consultant & Founder

Leading architecture and transformation engagements across banking, insurance, and industrial sectors. Building internal platforms that redefine how architectural work gets done. Pioneering the Strategic Response Delay diagnostic as the research backbone for a forthcoming DBA at the University of Pretoria.

  • Enterprise capability models (L1–L4) for major South African financial institutions.

  • Value stream architectures for claims, credit decisioning, underwriting, and customer lifecycle management.

  • Operating model transitions: bancassurance → platform → ecosystem business model evolution.

  • Built StrategyMapper Pro: macOS-native capability, Wardley, and value-chain mapping inside one canvas.

  • Built Soaring Wings Pro: the SRD scoring engine across six capability stocks, calibrated against the working paper.

  • Pioneered AI-augmented architecture practice with knowledge graphs and on-device AI.

  • AI Literacy for Performance curriculum — frontier-aware programmes for executive teams.

  • Strategic Response Distance (SRD) framework — peer-reviewed working paper v0.3, dissertation backbone for the DBA.

2015 — 2018 Major South African bank · Insurance division

Business Architect, Insurance Division

Embedded architecture practice within a complex insurance transformation programme. Multi-line of business modernisation across motor, funeral, and life insurance lines.

  • Claims and underwriting value streams: from FNOL through settlement, instrumented for speed, fraud control, and regulatory reporting.

  • Product-centric operating model design across distribution, policy administration, and claim systems.

  • Strategy-to-execution mapping connecting board-level strategic intent to delivery-team backlog.

  • Architecture practice governance: decision rights, escalation pathways, and the review cadence the programme actually used.

2010 — 2015 Solution & enterprise architecture roles · Various organisations

Architect — Foundation Years

Foundation years across integration architecture, application rationalisation, cloud strategy, microservices adoption, and the practice of translating between technology and business intent. The years where the difference between a model that documents and a model that decides became unmistakable.

§2 — Education & research
In progress University of Pretoria

DBA — Strategic Architecture

Doctorate of Business Administration with dissertation on Strategic Response Delay. Engagement work becomes the primary data; SRD framework is the analytical apparatus. Pathway from prior MPhil research on dynamic capabilities.

Completed University of Pretoria

MPhil — Entrepreneurship & dynamic capabilities

Research focus on dynamic capabilities in entrepreneurial contexts. Field interviews with founders and operators. Theoretical groundwork that later opened into the SRD programme.

Continuing Various
